Mental disorders

Now this isn't just about being trans, but the is a little of that. Question, how many of you of you have yourself, or a family history of, auxiliary mental disorders, and how does that affect your view of yourself an who you are? My family on my dads moms side has a history of schitzofrinia, paranoia, epilepsy, dislexia, extreme anxiety, sociopathy, autism, and others. That side also tends to be of higher intelligence and talent than average. there does tend to be a correlation, if not a causation, between that. It may be because they view the world in a fundamentally different way, but that's beside the point. Considering I'm fairly intelligent, even by my family's standards, I am incredibly worried that I may have some kind of break. I know that I have mild sociopathy, and I believe I have had a seizure. But then again that just may be paranoia. *wry smile* see what I mean? Anyway, that's my lot, what about youse guyses?

I can't conceive of what mild sociopathy means... sociopathy (or by its current name Antisocial Personality Disorder) is pretty hardcore when it comes to mental illnesses. Anyways, psychology geeking aside. I've never been Dx'd with a condition but after doing a battery of psychological testing for one of my classes, I present with symptoms consistent with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and/or Dysthymia (a specific form of depression) Neither Dx has been confirmed but they seem fairly accurate.

Of course before I could get an accurate Dx on either condition I'd have to rule out GID causing my other symptoms.

Well, I took a pretty standard sociopathy test, and I got a 32. A sociopath has a much higher score, but a normal person has like a 9. And the way that it presents in me is hard to describe, and like I said, sometimes it's worse. Like sometimes I can't even fathom the way others feel or think, and others I'm able to. But usually I'm able to fake it.

Uhm. In my family we have depression, anxiety, asperger's syndrome, multipersonality disorder... I think that's everything. :/ Oh, and Alzheimers.

God! I have strep throat again. That probably explains my panic attack. That's the third time in three months

Paternally, a grandmother and aunt have had mental issues...seems that grandma has them from physiological problems. Maternally, an uncle "snapped" in Vietnam but otherwise all the problems in that side of the family, well, I would be surprised if there weren't problems. Everyone likes to dismiss things, sweep them under the rug, even "real" (physiological) medical problems. I guess it "embarrasses" the family. They can blow it out their asses, lol. In fact, when I came out on Facebook, all my mom did was insult me and try to guilt me "because everyone is talking about [me]" and "[I'm] confusing all [my] little cousins who follow me on Facebook" only I don't have any that do. Weird.

As for me, I have been misdiagnosed and threatened of misdiagnosis. Nothing so far that's real.
I'll respond to anything but am partial to chief.

Ugh, mental illness... How are you guys coping with your issues these days? I hope stuff is going okay (or good! or excellent!) for you.

Depression on both sides of the family, anxiety on my dad's side. My brother is quite dyslexic, my dad and I less so (and we're undiagnosed; brother has a Dx). I think my dad might be bipolar or cyclothemic, but he hasn't been diagnosed with it. My folks both call my dad "compulsive," and he might have mild OCD, but it doesn't really cause a problem. As for me, I'm schizoaffective (hallucinations + long, very severe depressive episodes + occasional relatively short (couple weeks) hypomanic episodes), I had generalized anxiety disorder (which left for a few years but seems to be coming back), and I'm pretty sure I was median (on the multiple spectrum) for a few years. I also have this psychogenic crap that causes severe tremors and/or muscle weakness; it gets worse with stress and lack of sleep, but it happens even when I'm *not* stressed and have slept well, so no one really knows what causes it.

Meds, willpower, and friends/family saved me from myself and kept me going. I'm doing really well now, except for the anxiety and tremors coming back.
Mom and brother are doing well, dad is doing okay but could be a lot better. He doesn't usually let it show, but he says thing sometimes... I wish I could help, especially because my gender stuff is part of what's causing him so much pain.

on My Mother's said we have Bi-Polar ( Manic Depressive - though I am sure there IS a slight difference) and anx. and some other things I consider to be mental disorders.. ( Moms aunt or great aunt use to rape her little brother then use a pencil eraser to commit an at home self abortion every time she got pregnant)... Mom's uncle was a child molester yet he dies the christmas eve I was 7 3 months after he tried to molest me and got busted...

On My Dad's side I'd say just plain stuck upidness... you know " I'm better then everyone else because I am from this family" type vibe.. which isn't really a mental illness but should be in my opinion. I really don't know of anymore but I am sure there are some.

I was diagnosed with manic depressive and anx.
Was on Zoloft for a while till I started carving words into my legs O.O which I had never even thought of doing till I got on that shit! then they changed me to Lithium... I was on it for a while and did well but I lost contact with my ride to the doctor so I haven't had it in a long while. (Maybe I should go get another check up and see what they diagnose me as now, eh?)

Major Depressive Disorder, officially, but I tend to have some bi-polar tendencies, and issues with anxiety.

As far as the family's concerned, my mum was diagnosed with depression years ago, and my grandfather had schizophrenia. There's a lot of Alzheimer's (sp??) running rampant in the older folk too.

Talking with my parents, there seems to have been anorexia about in our family, as well as dyslexia & depression
As for myself, only Dyslexia officially, but I feel there might be some dysthymia here too

Bipolar disorder and anxiety seems to be the staple, depression too. I count myself lucky I only suffer from the last two.

I suffer from mild depression and anxiety. I suspect that my father suffers from it too but he was never diagnosed. As far as taking online tests to see if you have some type of mental illness, I wouldn't put too much faith into those tests. I think the only way to know if you suffer from anything is to see a doctor or therapist.
