Dwarves and genderqueer characters

Dwarves and genderqueer characters

Postby ewd » Sun Oct 04, 2009 5:17 pm

It occurs to me that I really should have roleplayed female dwarves more - like ever.

Bearded (at least in my mind they are) girls....ultimate way to screw with other races binary thinking.

Anyone else like Dwarves as an androgynous symbol?

Also, I know a lot of us have played female characters when we roleplay - but what about playing a genderqueer or androgyne character? I played a eunuch once, but that was as close as I got.

I roleplayed a female dwarf (in a setting where female dwarves apparently didn't have beards) who, due to a curse she was trying to keep secret, had a beard that couldn't be removed, and who was pretending to be male to avoid having to explain why she had a beard.

I don't do pen-and-paper RPGs, but in computer RPGs I've had characters who are (according to my invented backgrounds) gay, bi, asexual, androgynous, etc.. Oh, and I had a string of male Angband characters named Rose. I just thought it would be a really cool name for a guy.

Never played as a female Dwarf though. Not sure why.

um, i know this thread is from a few years back, but i thought i'd add my two cents here. ^^;; i don't know how familiar you are with the works of terry pratchett, but he uses dwarves to comment on gender. there is no dwarvish word for "female"; all dwarves are assumed male (and yes they all have beards), and the general consensus is that when two dwarves like each other, they'll figure out who's got what parts under the armor. there are actually a few books dealing with a female dwarf named cheery littlebottom who decided to tell the world that she -was- a female. ("she didn't shave her beard though. she -was- still a dwarf.")

anyway, i thought you might find that interesting. sorry if i shouldn't have posted in an older thread! ^^;;
