Disclosure Letter

Postby Sar » Thu Jul 29, 2010 11:54 pm

So i'm looking for advice on how to come out/disclose to my residence hall head. He's a great guy-and has already had Trans 101 but I'm terrified of doing it.
Any tips/tricks/sample phrases I could use?
[doesn't have to be formal as he's not very.]
Thanks!

I'd just keep it pretty simple and just tell him what he needs to know. Like if he knows about trans stuff already then maybe just something like writing that "I've come to realise that I am trans and identify as male, and I would appreciate it if you would treat me as a male from now on". Then just go on to practical stuff like what you want to be called, pronouns, dealing with transphobia and/or if your residence is gender segregated, how you want to deal with that. And any other stuff that might be an issue with where you live.

Thanks for your help! :)
I wound up going with this:
So I've come to realize that I am trans and identify as male, and I would appreciate it if you would treat me as a male from now on.
My preferred name is Callum or Cal-I'll answer to both, as well as *last name*
What this would also entail would be that, aside from the obvious name change, is that my preferred pronouns would be male.

I am worried about transphobia from the other residents though and would like to know I have your support and help should anything happen.

As for the rooming situation-although I've told both of my roommates about it and they have said they don't mind me being transgender-legally I am still female [at this stage in my transition I also wouldn't feel comfortable rooming with other guys].
I can't quite think of anything else but this should cover the basics.
But if you have any questions, feel free to ask me on Facebook or when I come back August 19th.

Looks good. :) Simple, explains your concerns, and leaves it open so that the RA can ask any questions. I think it was good to mention your roommates since I imaigne that'd be a concern.
