Name you go by and why?

Postby Mushdoomxx » Wed Jun 02, 2010 12:42 pm

Did you find yourself an androgynous/genderqueer or opposite gendered name, or do you just go with yours? And why? ^^

Oh, let me start, hehe.
My name is Madison, it wasn't chosen by me, I was just born with it.
I know it is thought of as female, but it was actually a male name originally and can be both.
I think it matches me because that whole last sentence can describe me as well. ^^

Plus I like it-well, except when people call me Maddi I want to scream.

I was going by Sar [just a shortened version of my birth name] but that felt too feminine.

Now, I'm going by Cal [short for Callum] which fits much better [especially considering my gender ID].

Current identity: (0.5, 0.2)

There are three names I commonly go by.

Adam and Coda are my "male" names, used when I'm identifying (or at least presenting) as male. Adam is my given name. Coda is a nickname I picked in 2000, for a number of reasons.

Lyn is my "female" name, used when I'm identifying as female. (For those of you who don't know me, I'm genderfluid.) It's actually my given middle name, except with an "n" dropped to make it more obviously feminine.

At one point I was using Karen as my "female" name; it was what my given name WOULD have been if I had been born female. I stopped using it around the time I decided I was going to start coming out -- since I didn't end up using my name, it was given to my cousin, and it would be problematic for there to be two Karens in the same family.

I actually go by my hypergendered birth name predominately, but while that name has no widely excepted nickname, the one I got from it is "Lee", so I have gone by Lee or various names with a "Lee" sound in them (like Leef, which is why the Leaf on this board always makes go 'I didn't post that!...oh...right').

My family and close friends use it, and I went by it my senior year of high school in some of my classes (I am always really inconsistent in what I ask people to call me....). My sister calls me Lee-Lee-Loo sometimes, or just Loo which I always reply with "I am not a British toilet!"

Lee is supposedly the masculine spelling, but, Leigh just doesn't fit me at all, no matter what gender you want to say that is. I've always thought of Lee as an unisex name.

But really, I don't feel like a Lee, whatever gender (or not) anyone thinks that describes. I really, really am attached to my birth name despite the fact that it literally labels me a binary gender. Which is why you should never name your children words that mean "Boy" or "Girl" in some other language, you could be wrong!

I've been trying to get my mind around some other, nongendered name, for some possible future where I am out all the time to everyone. Nothing seems to feel just right, though there are plenty I like, none I want to commit to.

Oddly enough, I would not have to change my middle names at all, since my parents flouted custom by giving me two that would be kinda weird for either gender anyway, but one sounds more feminine and the other more masculine, so, the middle is kind balanced.

The easiest thing would to just get over my birthname and be Lee. But I never do anything the easy way.

The full name I have chosen for myself is Danyl (pronounced like Daniel), but I usually go by the name Danny because it seems very boyish and also very genderneutral, so it fits perfectly for somebody that identifies as a genderqueer boy.

For a while I went by the name Joss, an androgynous variation of my male name; Joshua. I figured it would be an easy transition for people who were used to calling me Josh.

But it never stuck with me, I just didn't like it.

I ke,t coming back to Kaylee, a name I'd used on the net during my aborted first explorations into my gender identity. I've since changed the spelling to Kayleigh, and that's the name I now prefer.
I don't like the suggestion that I'm somehow less of a person, just because I don't want to do what everyone else does.

I generally go by my birth name, more because I have this horrible inability to lie on the spot. >> I'm trying to get people to call me either Quinn or Aalt; if I ever get a legal name change, Quinn will be my first, Aalt will be my middle.

In my day-to-day life, I am currently closeted, and going by my birth name.
When I move in queer circles, I go by Vix. Funny story, actually... I was granted the nickname Vicks by a dear friend of mine after I regaled her with the story of what happens when you have a chest cold and arousal and do an inadequate job of washing the Vicks Vapor Rub off of your hands before applying said hands to rather sensitive parts of the anatomy.
It being a namey-name as well as a menthol rub, and suitably androgynous, I decided to keep it.

Born: A feminine name starting with 'R'.
Will soon go by: Riley
Want to switch to: Andy, then Andrew

I'm choosing Riley now because it's gender neutral and I'm not foolish enough to think I can actually pass well without hormones, so I'm only going to switch over to Andy once I've started on those, and then perhaps Andrew later on down the road. I don't really like the name Riley much, but I've gotten used to it, and it seems to fit me.

I would like Eldon when i go to college. I got it originally from a name generator for a game. it was a "male" name but it sounded to me a bit half and half.

On the internet, people usually call me "Kai", which can be either so I'm fine with that.
Offline my real name is Carley. I'm in the closet, so I've never asked people to use anything else. I've been searching for a name that suits me.

I'm hoping to find either a boys name or a unisex name that people usually think of as male. I could just use the male version of my name which is "Charlie" (which I'd shorten to Chazz) but there are SO MANY CHARLIES here! (No offense meant to anybody on this board named Charlie or who likes the name Charlie. It's just that I know like four of them.) I don't want a really common name. Causes too much confusion.

Best fit I'm looking at right now is "Li." It's generally thought of as a male name (around here anyway, although I did know one Leigh). Also, I could ask people to call me by that probably even without outing myself, since it could be interpreted as a shortened version of my birth name.

I'm a Jacqueline. It's a name you can do a lot with. If I want to obscure my birth sex, I go with Jack, which is what my family calls me anyway; otherwise I'm Jacqui or Jacqueline depending on how formal the situation is (Jacqueline looks better on business cards).

I've decided to stay with my birth name: Brett.

Recently I discovered that it was really a feminine name that has come into unisex usage. So, I'm quite happy with this. I might change the spelling to "Brette" since I have to change the spelling anyway due the fact that it was never spelled right on my birth certificate. (It's "Bret" and should have been "Brett").

I'm also considering changing my middle name, but my spouse has a problem with this**. My middle name is "Lance" but I want it to be "Lana." She could deal with "Lanae" (the German version of Lana) or even "Rene," my dad's middle name, or she could also live with two middle names such as: "Lance Lana" (our son has two middle names).

**You would have to understand my history and marital dynamics to know why. I may share that when it seems more relevant, maybe as an introduction since this is my very first post on this forum!

Umm, OK, just a little bit: Poetically, I am a female soul clothed in a male form. Bluntly, I am a MTF transsexual who has chosen to remain in male form for the sake of my wife and my marriage vows to her and to God. BUT wait, it's not even THAT simple! I'm really a blend of genders and my body is not fully male either. AND my spouse is actually a (mostly) male soul clothed in a (mostly) female form!

Since I have given-up my "right" to SRS (a dozen years ago) and to hormones (at least as long as my spouse lives), then I will live as transgendered "in-between." I call this expression: "Fairly Uniquely Brett" (FUB) and I'm working on how I do this exactly. I'm becoming MUCH better at "passing" as me!!! (AND, overall, I've received a lot of positive feedback!)

I am thoroughly convinced that God will give me a new and fully suitable body for me in eternity, and it's that knowledge (and my love-relationship with Him) that enables me to endure my body as it is in it's male form - it's only temporary! :-)
