Is it just me?

Postby GandT27 » Thu May 21, 2009 10:25 am

I don't feel right in mens or womens clothing, even if they look neutrol. Is it just me?
Where can I buy Neutrois clothing?

I don't think neutrois is well enough known to the people to warrant a style specific to neutrois. But if you mean androgynous clothes...

If you've got the time and skill, you could always try making your own. I would but... yeah, no. I lack any and all clothing-related skills.

I suppose I experience something similar. At the moment, I don't care how others percieve me but I do care how I percieve myself, so I want clothes that look gender neutral to me rather than making me look androgynous. It's pretty difficult to find stuff, but then, I was never much interested in (or good at) shopping in the first place.

I wear Converses* and they list both men's and women's sizes on the same box. That qualifies them as unisex in my book (provided they aren't a color or pattern that is typically perceived as masculine or feminine) despite the fact that I have to pick them up either in the men's section or the women's section. T-shirts can also just be cut and labelled "adult", rather than men's or women's. The ones I own are mostly souvenirs from some group, place, or event. I also own a plain baseball cap. No mesh, no logo, and in neutral colors like green or yellow. I just deal with underclothing and swimwear the best I can, since there aren't a lot of options. Everything else, I just mix and match which sections I get them from.

*Insert rant about how Converses used to be so much cooler fifteen-or-so years ago here.

I feel you bigtime. I don't mind mixed-n-match androgynous styles, especially if it is understated, but there is something about intentionally unisex garments that is even more attractive on both the physical and mental level. There needs to be a good unisex line of comfortable yet stylish clothes that can fit on a range of bodytypes and still look good.

In almost all shops clothes are always divided by genders, but that itself doesn't have to be a problem: It's still very possible to find t-shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, even pants that can be considered gender neutral. What matters is the shape and size [not too tight], and also patterns and colours [they are not inherently gender signs, but conventionally people perceive some colours and designs as such. So we still should keep this in mind in our choices of clothes, because while it's only clothes and clothes does not equal gender, it still affects how people are going to perceive us.]

In big enough stores you can find very similar looking neutral clothes in both men and women's departments. I know straight guys who are not feminine at all that shop in the women's section because they say it fits better, and girls that do in men's sections for similar reasons. There are a few online stores that have unisex clothing, shoes and accessories, but it takes some serious investigation to find them. Often they are in the punk or goth styles as these groups embrace androgyny. Perhaps compiling a link page of online neutral and androgynous clothing sites would be useful for people here if anyone was interested.

I noticed recently that a clothes chain store called "D-Tox" features unisex clothing.

Wow missed this post when I made my similar one. I would love a list of sites featuring unisex/punk/goth/androg clothing.
