mtf prostate question

Postby SarahNicole » Sat May 21, 2011 12:59 pm

I can't seem to find an answer on Google, so I'll ask here. Hopefully somebody knows.

When having srs done, why not remove the prostate? All resources say that it remains, yet does not specify if there is an explicit reason for keeping it. Does it provide any benefit? It's not a vital organ, and the only side effect that would bother an mtf person is bladder incontinence.

If and when I get the surgery, I'd love to get rid of my prostate, as I don't want the embarrassment of having to get it examined for cancer.

My understanding is that they leave it in because it's not a cancer risk if you're on female hormones (why T-blockers are often prescribed as a treatment for prostate cancer) and removing it runs risk of doing nerve damage, while possibly requiring extra incisions because it's inconvenient to the other stuff they're doing.

I've heard the same -- the surgical steps involved are supposed to be pretty invasive, so when you add that on top of SRS...

Maybe if it were somehow performed separately? It seems like it would still be a risky procedure, though.
