Unisex Hairstyles

Postby Wesley_Lexi » Sat Apr 05, 2008 11:10 pm

Okay, so me and Lex are trying to find a hairstyle that works for the both of us, so it's gotta be unisex/androgynous/nongendered. We were thinking shoulder-length or longer for Lex, but we're open to all suggestions. Here's a list of what we're considering, and what's OUT.

Possible:
Image•Ponytail (But laid down, more of a male ponytail, not arced up and feminine)- Works for me, artsy, simple, easy to manage, and for Lex it's the right length for her to let down if she wants. On the other hand, my mom doesn't care for it (though she says she'll go along with it if that's what I want), and none of my friends can see it on me either.
Image•Layered/Razor kind of cut (not emo)- Works for me because it's short and I like the look. Unisex, but Lexi would rather have longer hair.
Image•Flicked Cut- Same reasons as above.

Not Options:
Image•Afro- In this age, it only works for black people, and I am white. Also, not really a feminine hairstyle anymore.
Image•Cornrows- Unisex, but doesn't work for white people (IMO). Too short as well.
Image•Emo Cut- VERY unisex, but I'm just not down with the emo scene. Too short anyway.

Anyway, what I'm looking for is other ideas, or opinions on these. It would be preferrable to add a few styles to the possible list though, just so we have more options.

EDIT: Also, just for reference, I'll include a picture of myself, and a picture of how Lex views herself.

(Sorry, this is most recent pic I have. Me and my girlfriend.)

But... I love emo hair...

Anyway, try growing it out, doing the ponytail thing. Just to test it. Because if it's long and you don't like it, cutting is always an option for quick change, which it isn't if you decide you don't like something shorter.

The first one is what we do, but our hair is much much much longer than that. Like, waist long.

OK ,seeing the picture of you, I really can't picture you with a ponytail either. But I still think you should experiment to find something you and Lexi both like. Even the ponytail, just to see.

Absolutely, sir and miss. The pony tail appears to be your solution!

I think it would look fine. What makes long hair look good is that you take care of it. Lexi might be so happy about it that you can leave that up to her. :)

Certainly could. She doesn't mind that kind of stuff. She'd be happy of the constant reminder that the hair was there!

You could always go with a shorter pony tail, like hair that only goes down to your shoulders. It would be more manly than a longer style so it could appeal to both of you.

That's more or less what we're planning on. Either shoulder-length or just a little longer.

Man I absolutely LOVE male pontytails. That is the exact hair style I'm trying to go for my hair but I don't exactly know how to get my hair to look like one. I love my long hair and I don't want to cut it short..I want to be a long-haired transguy but it'll be hard trying to come off as masculine. I don't like emo cuts much either but they definetly are unisex.

Ponytails can look nice, and once it gets long enough, it can be quite convenient to simply tie it back and be on your way.

I personally like razor/layered cuts, as well as those with angles to them best. A cool unisex haircut I've seen around is medium length just above the shoulders. There are face framing layers which were very flattering to either sex, and got longer toward the back. Also the shorter versions of the 'a-line' haircut with longer bangs in front and progressively shorter hair in the back can look pretty damn slick and stylin' on both guys and girls too.

You could always shave half your head, and apply homemade ECG contacts and wires to that half, and then you can plug the DIY ECG box to the audio input on your personal(I mean personal in the strictest sense of the word, as in wearable, or a sub-notebook) computer, and use it to control your computer, the other half you could go all crazy with, dye funky colors, get those weird crazy goth hair extensions, hot pink would work, or maybe green, ohh green would be neat,....

Ok that was not serious, but you know a mohawk is a unisex hairstyle, not suggesting it, kinda 90's, but if we are listing unisex hairstyles then there you go.

Comb it straight back from your brow. If you have a bit of a widow's-peak, it'll look more male. If your hairline frames your face in a true oval, it won't work as well. Do not let it fall into a center-part, or you will look like you fell off a covered wagon and need a gingham apron. Secure it at the nape of your neck, not the back of your head. Your hair must be quite long to do this, longhair cisgendered males complain about this all the time. Until it gets that long, you can do two, one at the nape of your neck and one on the back of the head, but make sure the back of the head one hangs straight down, doesn't stick out -- it's not holding any hair from below it's securing-point. Take the little tufts of hair that grow just in front of your ears and cut them off short (clippers are a help) and square, to form (very short) fake sideburns.

With long hair, Wesley and Lexi could do this and then change gender-expressions by changing the way the 'tail is worn. Wes won't need to cut fake sideburns. Lexi can wear a part and pull more tendrils of hair out to fall in front of her ears for the feminine look, and secure her pony-tail with a scrunchy and have it stick out straight from the back of her head, in a kicky girlish style. And she can experiment with fancy french-braids and stuff, for 'sophisticated' feminine long-hair styles. They are not hard to do.

And if for any reason you want it to look short, pin it up, under a hat!

Back when I began discovering gender identities, I came across Visual Kei (Japanese music movement). It is probably more of a dressing-up style than anything, but they had some good androgynous haircuts. Sadly I'm not one to spend much time every morning to maintain those I found.
